Congress Summary

 

Valencia, Spain´s third largest city located on the Mediterranean coast, held the 1st International Congress of Hypertension in Children and Adolescents (ICHCA) from 9 to 11 February, 2018. The congress was endorsed by the European Society of Hypertension counting on the attendance and the active participation of members of the working group on hypertension in children and adolescents. The 123 participants from 46 countries had the chance to listen to 29 invited lectures. Furthermore 78 abstracts were submitted, together with seven short scientific communications and 48 electronic posters.

The program, as well as the presentations, was of an excellent scientific standard. The attendance at each session was very high. The discussions after each presentation gave the participants the chance to actively be part of the congress and also to clarify unanswered issues. The majority of those present are specialised in hypertension, enriching their knowledge in the field and exchanging scientific information.

  • Blood pressure tracking and risk from birth to adulthood
  • Clustering of cardiometabolic risk factor and ethnic differences in children and adolescents

  • 24 hour BP monitoring in children and adolescents
  • Understanding the pathogenesis of hypertension in children and adolescents – uric acid and fructose, obesity, environmental pollution, perinatal programming and genetic factors
  • Impact of hypertension on the heart and kidneys in children and adolescents
  • The importance of white hypertension in children and adolescents
  • The value of PWV and central aortic BP in the assessment of target organ damage and risk profiling in children and adolescents
  • Treating hypertension in children and adolescents with kidney disease and kidney transplants
  • Overview of guidelines for treatment of hypertension in children and adolescents

Considering the successful congress and after the Scientific Committee meeting, the organizers decided to go ahead with a new meeting in 2019.
