RIO-NA Confirms RIO-Europe and RIO-Lipids Results

November 9, 2004 (eshonline.org) – The Rimonabant in North America (RIO-NA) trial showed that the investigational cannabinoid type 1 receptor reduced body weight and waist circumference and significantly reduced central adiposity. Unlike previously studied weight-loss medications, with rimonabant the improvements were maintained at 2 years. Further, HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased, triglycerides reduced, and insulin sensitivity improved. These improvements were independent of the weight loss.

RIO-NA randomized 3040 patients (45 years old on average, 81% female, baseline BMI 37.5 kg/m2 or 27 kg/m2 plus at least 1 cardiovascular risk factor) to 5 mg rimonabant, 20 mg rimonabant, or placebo. Patients with diabetes were excluded from the study. Notably, in the 20 mg rimonabant group the percentage with metabolic syndrome was reduced at 2 years compared to placebo (22.5% compared to 34.8%).
