cardiovascular events
Back to Basics: CASE-J study confirms lower blood pressures, treatment per se reduces CV events - Greater benefit in elderly patients

June 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy – A subanalysis of the randomized controlled CASE-J study in high-risk Japanese patients (mean age 64 years, 55% male) showed that the blood pressure reduction below 140/80 mmHg itself, not the treatment allocation, was responsible for the reduction in cardiovascular (CV) events. Further, an increased number of events in the underscores the benefit to be gained in this growing population.

Bp control
Ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring leads to better BP control more quickly
in BRIDGE study

June 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy – Blood pressure control driven by measurement of ambulatory blood pressure at baseline and 6 months and home blood pressure monitoring at months 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 as part of an intensive control treatment regime resulted in 2-fold more changes in antihypertensive treatment and 2-fold more frequent clinic visits, compared to usual treatment.

OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY
Uncontrolled hypertension, CV risk factors
and morbidity high in Spanish population survey

Overweight and obesity in the Spanish population was shown to be related to high rates of uncontrolled hypertension and associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and morbidity. The cross-sectional, multicenter survey was conducted in general practice in Spain and reported by Prof. O. Gonzalez Albarran, Madrid, Spain, at the 17th European Meeting on Hypertension, held in Milan from June 15 to June 19, 2007.

HYVET analyses provide more insights
into effects of hypertension in the elderly

June 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy – The very elderly have a 2-fold higher prevalence of 25 common symptoms, according to an analysis of this population in the HYVET study compared to the Syst-Eur population, who were 13 years younger on average.

BP and GENERAL PRACTITIONERS
Underassessment of CV risk by general practitioners revealed in the BRIDGE study

June 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy – A comparison of cardiovascular (CV) risk as predicted by general practitioners and that generated from the electronic case report form (e-CRF) showed that physicians underestimate risk, and in high-risk patients this underestimation is by as much as 2-fold. The findings from the Blood Pressure Reduction in Danish General practice (BRIDGE) study of intensive and usual care treatment regimes in general practice were presented by Prof. P. Schultz-Larsen, Virum, Denmark at the 17th European Meeting on Hypertension in Milan, held June 15-19, 2007.

OBESITY
Better prediction of hypertension in children
with BMI plus other parameters of fat distribution

June 17, 2007 – Milan, Italy – A study in Italian children has shown that body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WtHr) are independent predictors, and that integrating WC and WtHr with BMI improves identification of hypertension, particularly in obese children. The results were presented by Prof. F. Pieruzzi, Clinica Nefrologica, Monza, Italy, at the 17th European Meeting on Hypertension, held in Milan from June 15 to June 19, 2007.

OBESITY
SBP higher in boys with visceral adiposity
in SAGUENAY Youth study

Adolescent boys, but not adolescent girls, have higher systolic blood pressure in relation to visceral obesity. Stroke volume is higher in both boys and girls, while total peripheral resistance is only increased in girls with visceral obesity. The results of this analysis of the SAGUENAY Youth Study were presented by Prof. C. Syme, Nottingham, UK, at the 17th European Meeting on Hypertension, held in Milan from June 15 to June 19, 2007.
