The Potential Blood Pressure Lowering Benefit of Azilsartan Medoxomil

Monday, 21st June - In a recent study comparing azilsartan medoxomil (AZL-M) with olmesartan medoxomil (OLM-M) and placebo, AZL-M therapy was found to be safe and effective in patients with primary hypertension. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) such as OLM-M are thought to be better tolerated than other classes of antihypertensives. However, many patients continue to experience inadequate blood pressure (BP) control despite medical therapy. Therefore, more therapeutic options are being investigated in the hopes of providing more reliable BP control. OLM-M was chosen as a comparative ARB due to its similarity to AZL-M with regards to its mechanism of action.

An Innovative Approach to Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Results from the C-CHAP Study

Monday, 21st June - A community outreach program aimed at improving cardiovascular (CV) health awareness is an effective, feasible approach to CV management and risk reduction, according to results from the Community Cardiovascular Health Awareness Program (C-CHAP). Lisa Dolovich, BScPhm, MSc, PharmD, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, presented results from this Canadian community cluster, randomized, controlled trial at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.

Aliskiren-Based Therapy Controls Blood Pressure Regardless of Plasma Renin Activity

Monday, 21st June - Aliskiren, a direct renin inhibitor, provides effective blood pressure (BP) control in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and amlodipine regardless of baseline plasma renin activity (PRA) in patients with hypertension, according to findings from a new study. Aliskiren was well tolerated as monotherapy and when used in combination with other antihypertensive medications.

Results from the ACCORD BP Trial

Monday, 21st June - Intensive blood pressure (BP) control did not reduce the rate of a composite outcome of major cardiovascular (CV) events in high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), according to the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD; NCT00000620) BP Trial. However, intensive BP control correlated with reductions in the rate of total stroke and nonfatal stroke. Richard H. Grimm, MD, PhD, Berman Center for Clinical Research, Minneapolis, MN, presented new findings from the ACCORD BP Trial at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.

All Patients with Uncontrolled Blood Pressure on Valsartan Monotherapy Benefit from Switch to Combination Therapy

Monday, 21 June - Classifying patients with uncontrolled hypertension by degree of response to valsartan monotherapy has a limited value in predicting which patients will benefit from the addition of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), according to findings from a new study. Despite failing to meet blood pressure (BP) targets with valsartan monotherapy, all patients with stage 2 hypertension experience dose-dependent improvements in BP control with the addition of HCTZ.

Olmesartan Reduces Microalbuminuria in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Sunday, 20th June - Early treatment with the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) olmesartan significantly reduced the risk of developing microalbuminuria among patients with type 2 diabetes, according to new interim findings from the ongoing Randomized Olmesartan and Diabetes Microalbuminuria Prevention (ROADMAP) trial. However, olmesartan also appeared to increase the risk of cardiovascular (CV) mortality, raising concerns about the safety of ARBs in this patient population.

A Different Analytic Approach to Assess J-curve Findings from the FEVER Trial

Sunday, 20th June - When taking a detailed look at the J-shaped relation between an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events and achieved systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) <120/70 mm Hg, investigators concluded that the J-curve is a real phenomenon based on further analysis of the FEVER data. Xuezhong Zhang, MD, Clinical Trials and Research Center, Chinese Hypertension League, Beijing, China, presented finding from this innovative approach to the FEVER data at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.

Self-Management Better Than Usual Care in Reducing Blood Pressure Levels in Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension

Sunday, 20 June - Self-management of hypertension with self-monitoring of blood pressure (BP) levels and self-titration of antihypertensive medications results in significantly lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) compared with usual care, according to findings from the Telemonitoring And Self-Management In The Control Of Hypertension (TASMINH2) trial.

First-Line Treatment with Combination Aliskiren/Amlodipine Improves Blood Pressure Control Over Amlodipine Alone in Moderate and Severe Hypertension

Sunday, 20 June - First-line combination therapy with aliskiren and amlodipine provided greater reductions in blood pressure (BP) levels and higher rates of BP control compared with amlodipine monotherapy in patients with moderate or severe hypertension, according to new findings from a prospective trial. Combination therapy was also well tolerated, suggesting an important role for aliskiren/amlodipine in the management of patients with type 2 hypertension.

Candesartan and Amlodipine: Effect on the Incidence of Cardiovascular Events and New-Onset Diabetes

Sunday, 20th June - The 3-year extension of the Candesartan Antihypertensive Survival Evaluation in Japan (CASE-J) Study demonstrated comparable efficacy of the angiotensin receptor blocker candesartan and the calcium channel blocker amlodipine on the incidence of cardiovascular (CV) events in high-risk hypertensive Japanese patients. As observed in the earlier phase of the study, cadesartan exhibited sustained superiority over amlodipine with regards to reduction in new-onset diabetes throughout the 3-year extended follow up. Kazuwa Nakao, MD, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, presented findings from the CASE-J extended follow-up study at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.

Single-Pill Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Severe Hypertension

Saturday, 19th June - Single-pill combination of telmisartan 80 mg/amplodipine 10 mg is superior to telmisartan or amlodipine monotherapy with regards to blood pressure reduction in patients with severe hypertension. Joel M. Neutel, MD, Orange County Research Center, Orange County, CA, presented findings from the TEAMSTA severe hypertension study at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.

Olmesartan Medoxomil versus Ramipril for the Treatment of Hypertension in the Elderly

Saturday, 19th June - Elderly hypertensive patients treated with olmesartan medoxomil demonstrated more favorable office blood pressure (BP) normalization rates and sustained 24-hour blood BP control compared with ramipril. Giuliano Tocci, MD, Sant’Andrea Hospital, Rome, Italy, presented findings from the Efficacy and Safety in Elderly Patients with Olmesartan versus Ramipril Treatment (ESPORT) trial at the European Society of Hypertension Annual Meeting in Oslo, Norway.
